How to open a .docx without Word
A .docx arrives, you do not have Word, and every search result
for "docx viewer" is a site that wants you to upload the document to their
server first. If the document is a contract, an invoice or anything with a
name on it, think about that for a second before you do.

Three ways to read it
1. Google Docs
Upload to Google Drive, open with Docs. It works, and the formatting survives well. Costs: you need a Google account, the file now lives in your Drive, and on a phone the app wants to be installed before it will open anything.
2. An online converter
"docx to pdf", "docx viewer", and so on. This is the
option to be careful with. You are uploading a private document to a service
you know nothing about, and the business model of most of those sites is not
obvious. Some keep the file; some publish a URL that anyone can guess.
3. Upload it and read it in place

If you are signed in, the document is private to your account — the link is not public. That is the difference between this and a converter site: it is your account, your storage, and you can delete it.

Does the formatting survive?
Headings, bold and italic, lists, tables and images come through. Complex layout — multi-column newsletters, text boxes, precise positioning — will drift, because the renderer is turning a page-description format into HTML. For reading a document, it is faithful enough; for reviewing a designed layout, open it in a real word processor.
Can I edit it?
No. This is a viewer. Download the file from the same page and open it in whatever editor you use.
Is my document public?
If you upload without signing in, yes — anonymous uploads are public and permanent. If you sign in, the board belongs to your account and you can make it private. For a contract or an invoice, sign in first, or make the board private right after uploading.
How long is it kept?
By default, forever — nothing expires on its own. You can delete it from My Boards at any time, and you can set an expiry on a board if you want it gone automatically.
